Coming from Hong Kong and growing up in Singapore, I've always been spoilt when it comes to food. Thinking about the food I get in Singapore always makes my tummy rumble and my heart ache to be back home.
Speaking of home, I've recently moved homes as well. It was hell over the weekend and it looked like a tornado swept through my old house. Seriously it was/is so bad. I haven't been back since we moved but am planning to go back to clean up and get the rest of my stuff tonight. I don't know how my parents managed to move house/countries so swiftly and awesomely. I am now trying to decorate my house and find storage space where there is none. SIGH
Last night, my boyfriend and I went to the 24 hours KMart at Blackburn to pick up some stuff. Since we were pretty far out, we decided to head over to Straits Cafe for dinner. I've never been there but when Sam was studying at Monash, he used to come here pretty often.
OHAI! I got bored sitting in the car... Stepping into Straits Cafe is like stepping into a hawker center. The kitchen is not hidden nicely behind and a old 'Auntie' serves you. That's the thing about being back in Malaysia/Singapore, everyone older than you is an Auntie or an Uncle.
Although the prawns were a little disappointing, the broth of the soup was amazing. Strong prawn stock taste, great flavour. Best prawn mee I've had in Melbourne so far (and I go to a lot of Malaysian restaurants) but nothing beats the ones in Singapore. Le sigh.
This is Sam's Assam Laksa - very unlike the common Laksa. This uses fish (usually mackeral) and tamarind (assam) to give it its sour taste. Oh and no coconut milk!
This. Is. So. Good. I had Assam Laksa a few times throughout my years of growing up but have never really developed a taste for it. But when it came, I helped myself to some soup and just couldn't get enough! The thick rice vermicelli they used for this was so yumzie as well! Sam wanted to order another serving of this to freeze in our fridge for next time but the Auntie advised him against it cos it won't keep well.
The 'kitchen' that was right next to us. I saw the chef serving up their Char Kway Teow. It looked fantastic. Got to try it next time..

I'm spoilt by the Prawn Mee in Singapore from Beach Rd and Zion Rd. Big juicy prawns, rich rich prawn broth with the addition of extra 'prawn powder' (I'm not really sure what this powder is actually...). Oh gosh. I'm going to start drooling if I don't stop now... The ULTIMATE noodle dish. If you don't believe me, check out this article in the Sydney Morning Herald!
I peeped over the counter to see what prawns they will be using. I feared that they would be 'crystal prawns'/frozen prawns. But they were fresh peeled prawns. A little disappointing but I ordered the Penang Har Mee anyway..

Om nom nom nom nom. Sam took away the Char Kway Teow for lunch at work today and I got their Special Fried Rice.. Follow me on Twitter for my live updates on how yum/meh it might be.
Highlights:
- Penang Har Mee broth = WIN
- Assam Laksa = EVEN MORE WIN
Mehs:
- Prawns in my Har Mee aren't what I am used to.
- Chinese Tea was 50cents per pop which is annoying. But that's the miser Asian me talking
Definitely check this place out if you are in the area. Won't go wrong with the Assam Laksa.
